چکیده

A method is developed to determine how crash characteristics are related to traffic flow conditions at the time of occurrence. Crashes are described in terms of the type and location of the collision, the number of vehicles involved, movements of these vehicles prior to collision, and severity. Traffic flow is characterized by central tendencies and variations of traffic flow and flow/occupancy for three different lanes at the time and place of the crash. The method involves nonlinear canonical correlation applied together with cluster analyses to identify traffic flow regimes with distinctly different crash taxonomies. A case study using data for more than 1000 crashes in Southern California identified twenty-one traffic flow regimes for three different ambient conditions: dry roads during daylight (eight regimes), dry roads at night (six regimes), and wet conditions (seven regimes). Each of these regimes has a unique profile in terms of the type of crashes that are most likely to occur, and a matching of traffic flow parameters and crash characteristics reveals ways in which congestion affects highway safety. 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Estimation of Reconstruction Cost and Traffic Functionality Relating to Roadway Transportation Lifelines after Natural Disasters

Earthquakes are among those natural hazards which may lead to disruption in the function of arterial traffic routes. Road networks are particularly vulnerable, due to their geographical dispersion, extensive functions and structural reliance on favourable geophysical conditions. Traffic functionality after a natural disaster and the repair/rehabilitation cost of roads are crucial considerations...

Dynamic Variable Speed Limit Strategies for Real-Time Crash Risk Reduction on Freeways

in the number and severity of shockwaves. The authors found that the implementation of variable speed limits provided calmer traffic and improved the distribution of the traffic over the available road space. In the United States, VSLs are used in Washington State, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Wisconsin to identify and implement a safe speed limit when inclement weather converges on vulnerable f...

Statistical Characteristics of Wrong-Way Driving Crashes on Illinois Freeways.

OBJECTIVE Driving the wrong way on freeways, namely wrong-way driving (WWD), has been found to be a major concern for more than 6 decades. The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics of this type of crash as well as to rank the locations/interchanges according to their vulnerability to WWD entries. METHODS The WWD crash data on Illinois freeways were statistically analyzed for a...

The Development of Maximum Likelihood Estimation Approaches for Adaptive Estimation of Free Speed and Critical Density in Vehicle Freeways

The performance of many traffic control strategies depends on how much the traffic flow models are accurately calibrated. One of the most applicable traffic flow model in traffic control and management is LWR or METANET model. Practically, key parameters in LWR model, including free flow speed and critical density, are parameterized using flow and speed measurements gathered by inductive loop d...
